How to Optimize and Recalibrate Your Gear

Optimizing your build and recalibrating play a big role in The Division 2. As you start creating builds for different roles and types of content, it’s important to understand how these systems work and how to avoid common mistakes.

What Is Optimization?

When you have the right gear but the stats are not maxed out, you can use optimization to increase those stats to their maximum values. This allows you to improve your gear and weapons without farming new pieces with better rolls.

However, optimization requires a large amount of materials. You may need to farm specific resources in order to fully optimize your gear, as maxing out stats can be expensive.

What Is Recalibration?

Recalibration allows you to change one stat on a piece of gear or a weapon. Instead of increasing a stat with optimization, recalibration lets you replace a stat entirely with a different one, or swap it for the same stat at a higher value.

For example, you can change Weapon Damage to Armor, and then optimize that new stat afterward.

Recalibration also costs materials, but when used correctly, it is much cheaper than optimization. This makes it a smart first step before spending large amounts of resources.

This system saves you time when farming gear. If you find a piece with great attributes but one stat isn’t what you want, you can use recalibration to replace that unwanted stat with the one you need.

However, keep in mind that you can only recalibrate one stat per piece of gear. Once a stat is recalibrated, all other stats on that item are locked and can only be improved through optimization.

What Is the Library?

Before you can use Recalibration, you need to understand and work on your Library, because the two systems are connected.

The Library stores attributes and talents from your gear and weapons. When you loot a piece of gear, you can extract one stat from it and save that stat in your Library. The item will be destroyed in the process, but the stat is saved permanently.

For example, if you extract 15% Weapon Damage, you can then use recalibration to apply that 15% Weapon Damage to other weapons as many times as you want.

However, stats are tied to their gear or weapon type. If you extract Weapon Damage from an Assault Rifle, you can only apply that stat to other Assault Rifles, not to different weapon types.

Building up your Library early makes recalibration easier, cheaper, and more effective later on.

How to Build the Library Fast

You can build your Library by playing any activity, but we recommend Countdown because it drops a large amount of loot and lets you target specific brand sets and weapon types.

When extracting stats for your Library, try to only extract max values. If you extract a low-value stat, you will later need to optimize it to reach the maximum, which costs extra materials.

Focusing on high rolls from the start will save you time and resources in the long run.

How Exotics Work

Exotic gear has fixed attributes, which means you cannot change them. Exotics can only be optimized to reach their maximum values.

However, Exotic weapons work a bit differently. You can recalibrate Exotic weapons, but not through the Tinkering Station. Instead, this is done at the Crafting Station.

When recalibrating an Exotic weapon, you can only change the third attribute. The new attribute is random, so you may need to recalibrate multiple times to get the one you want. Unlike normal weapons, you cannot choose which attribute you get.

Even if you have enough materials for a single recalibration, there is a chance you may end up with a worse attribute than before. Because of this randomness, recalibrating Exotic weapons can be risky.

If your Exotic weapon has Expertise levels, those will stay the same. Only the attributes are rerolled.

How to start

A camo-clad character stands armed, beside a digital menu showing "Library" in orange, with options for "Tinkering" and "Expertise."

Go to your Inventory. At the bottom of the screen, select the Tinkering Station option. You will see this menu, Optimization and Recalibration is under the Tinkering.

To extract attributes and talents for your Library, use the Library option from this menu and select the gear you want to extract.
